What Is a Health Care Surrogate Designation?
A health care surrogate designation is a legal document naming a person to make decisions about your medical care in the event you’re ever unable to do so. You can also designate an alternate in case the named surrogate is either unable or unwilling to make these decisions.
Your health care surrogate is obligated to make decisions based on what they believe you would have wanted. With that in mind, you should have a discussion with your surrogate now—while you’re still healthy—to make sure they understand your preferences. But if you become incapacitated and there’s no way to know what you would have thought about a certain issue, the surrogate will consider your best interests.
